Statement from Dean Erica Walker on the recent attack at the University of Waterloo

June 29, 2023

The OISE community is deeply disturbed by the June 28 attack at the University of Waterloo, where two students and one faculty member were injured. Today, we are thinking of them and all those who have close colleagues, friends and loved ones affected by this senseless act of violence. Reports suggest that this was a hate-motivated incident related to gender expression and gender identity — a detail that makes this attack all the more heinous.

The OISE community condemns this horrific act, and we denounce hate and violence in all their forms. Many of our faculty lead women and gender studies courses and conduct research in these areas; many OISE students take these courses as part of their development as classroom leaders and researchers.

None of us should feel threatened and unsafe in spaces that should be places for deep learning, connection and community. We must remain steadfast and resolute in our commitment to inquiry within inclusive, safe and welcoming learning environments for educators and learners.

Sincerely,

Erica Walker
